Cllr Sally Gurney, mayor of Wokingham, has performed the official opening of a new kitchen that will revolutionise the food offerings at a sports club.
Wokingham and Emmbrook Football Club was awarded the new kitchen as part of a nationwide initiative to boost grassroots football.
Working alongside the Football Association, building supplies retailer Howdens wanted to transform hundreds of lower league and grassroots clubhouses through its Game Changer Programme.
Mark Ashwell, president of Wokingham & Emmbrook Football Club, said: “I am thrilled we were chosen by Howdens to receive a new kitchen.”
Andrew Livingston, chief executive officer of Howdens, added: “The off-pitch facilities are vital, because clubhouses are the hub of the community.
“They’re the place for teas and coffees for the taxi of mum and dad, where the frozen wet feet of the army of volunteers dry off, and where the post-match discussion starts.”
With the football club playing as part of the Emmbrook Sports and Social Club, the new kitchen will also benefit the hundreds of players from Emmbrook and Bearwood Cricket Club, which also use the facility as its base.
Representatives from the football and cricket clubs, Howdens, and those who have helped to complete the project joined the Mayor at the opening on Monday evening.
