A LOWER Earley school marked National School Sports Week with visits from sporting specialists, an school sports day and a whole school family picnic.
National School Sports Week encourages youngsters to ‘play for fun, and play for 60’.
The aim is to help all children in the UK to be active.
The Chief Medical Officer recommends a minimum time of 60 minutes a day in order for youngsters to stay happy and healthy.
Pupils at Hawkedon Primary were able to participate in workshops throughout the week, with visits from circus performers, Reading Football club and My Journey Wokingham.
A midweek sports day at the primary school was opened by Earley Town Mayor, Cllr Caroline Smith, who also presented the winning house trophy.
Families from all the years were invited to watch the races and to bring a summer picnic to the school grounds.
Nikki Gladwin-Stride extended services manager for the school said: “Hawkedon has a fantastic reputation for sport, and our sports week is usually a favourite with everyone, students and staff alike.
“The children have been able to enjoy extra workshops including: fencing, circus skills, football with Reading Football Club, and cricket with PureCricket.
They also took part in cycling workshops with My Journey Wokingham, where they turned their hard earned pedalling into fresh fruit smoothies.”
Hawkedon sports day took place during a very warm weather period, but despite the heat, children and their families were able to enjoy lots of traditional races.
“Our Lower School Sports day was opened by Caroline Smith, Earley Town Mayor, who also stayed to present the sports day trophy,” said Ms Gladwin-Stride.
“The winning house this year was Yellow Eagles.
“It’s been fantastic to see all our pupils participating in multiple opportunities for physical education this week.
“I take great pride in organising the sports week each year.
“Its so important to give our pupils plenty of opportunity to keep fit and healthy, and to learn and develop skills.
“We are lucky to have a very dedicated sports team at Hawkedon.
“They positively and proactively promote sports by running multiple sporting clubs and tournaments, with hundreds of pupils taking part throughout the year.”
