ATTEMPTS to fix a gas leak on a main road in Finchampstead are continuing – meaning works continue to clash with the closure of California Crossroads.
SGN has had to close The Ridges for emergency repairs, and it had been hoped that the two schemes would not overlap.
However, while the firm has been carrying out its remedial works, additional leaks have been discovered and that means the closures will continue until at least next week.
In its weekly newsletter, Wokingham Borough Council said the closure of Finchampstead Road couldn’t be delayed any longer, and the road is shut from Ratepayers Hall to the California Crossroads junction.
There have been issues for motorists following sat nav diversions as some have been encouraging drivers to use Gorse Ride North, suggesting they can go through the car park of the FBC Centre this is not the case.
In their newsletter, Wokingham Borough Council wrote: “We’ve looked, but unfortunately there aren’t any suitable diversion routes to the south through Hampshire.
“Please follow the diversion signs and not your sat nav as it may not have the correct diversion information.”
SGN has been contacted for a comment.
Earlier this week, it was revealed that workers setting up the California Crossroads road closures had been threatened. One irate motorist implied they would stab the workers, while another attempted a hit and run.
As a result, construction teams have been equipped with body cams.
Cllr Paul Fishwick, executive member for active travel, transport and highways at Wokingham Borough Council, said: “This is completely unacceptable. These hardworking people have been threatened with stabbing and intentionally hit by a car just for doing their job.
“Road workers are there to do a job and to earn a living. How would the rest of us like it if our lives were threatened while we were just doing our jobs?
“This is completely unacceptable and we will use every power available to us to prosecute those responsible for such reprehensible behaviour.”
