A POLL of Conservatives carried out by The Times newspaper reveals that one of the borough’s four MPs should be the next Prime Minister.
Rated higher than Vote Leave figureheads Boris Johnson and Michael Gove, Maidenhead MP Theresa May – whose constituency includes Twyford, Hurst and Charvil – is seen as a strong contender for the role.
The vacancy comes after David Cameron resigned as Conservative leader on Friday, following Britain’s decision to leave the European Union in last week’s referendum.
Ms May came top of a poll by The Times, with 31% of people saying she should win. Her nearest rival, Mr Johnson, had just 24%.
The poll, conducted by YouGov, has Michael Gove trailing in a distant third place on 8%.
Other potential candidates including Stephen Crabb and Savjid Javid barely registered: 2% backed Javid and 1% backed Crabb, the same as Jeremy Hunt.
Almost a quarter of Conservatives – 24% – said they didn’t know.
Interestingly, in the same poll Mrs May came top from Labour and Liberal Democrat voters, but in third place from UKIP voters.
While Labour (18%) and Lib Dems (34%) favour Mrs May, UKIP would rather see Boris Johnson (48%) or Michael Gove (12%) in Number 10 ahead of Mrs May (9%).
Mrs May has yet to make a statement on whether she will stand or not.
