General Election 2019

ONE of the candidates in the Reading East constituency has been given an endorsement by local football magnate Sir John Madejski.

The honorary life president of Reading FC has been pictured at the Madejski Stadium with Craig Morley, who is contesting the seat for the Conservatives.

And in a post of Facebook, Mr Morley revealed that Sir John thinks that he would make a “fantastic” MP, with “energy and enthusiasm”.

It is the latest in a series of local endorsements for candidates this week.

On Monday, the actor Hugh Grant knocked on doors in Reading West to drum up support for Rachel Eden, who is standing for Labour.

The actor said that he was not party politicial, but supporting candidates who wanted to stay in the European Union standing against candidates who wanted to leave.

‘I am absolutely heartbroken’: Sir John Madejski speaks on Reading FC situation

Sir John Madejski: ‘I would urge fans not to protest against Mr Dai’ Former chairman shares thoughts on Reading FC’s financial issues

He said: “I just think that we have to do everything our power to stop there being a Tory majority on Thursday. I think that this bunch of Tories are scary, I think that they’re taking the country way to the right. I don’t see them having any real concern for the population, for the electorate and the constitution.”

And this morning The Wokingham Paper revealed that Wokingham Lib Dem candidate Dr Phillip Lee is being backed by Michael Heseltine and Ken Clarke.

However, Mr Morley – who is a supporter of Brexit – was delighted to receive the endorsement from Madejski, who also founded AutoTrader.

Sir John said: “Craig Morley is a Reading man born and bred and would make a fantastic Member of Parliament for Reading East.

“He attended local state schools and gained vital experience in the real world as a diplomat representing our country on the global stage.

“He’s got energy and enthusiasm and is bursting with ideas on how to improve things for local people.

“We need a Conservative MP back representing us in Reading East who will stand up for the people of Reading, respect democracy, and help the town take advantage of the many fantastic opportunities created by us leaving the EU  – I have no doubt that Craig is that man.”

There are six candidates standing in Reading East:

  • Mitch Feierstein, Brexit Party;
  • David McElroy, Green Party;
  • Craig Morley, Conservative Party;
  • Yemi Awolola, Christian Peoples Alliance;
  • Matt Rodda, Labour Party;
  • Imogen Shepherd-Dubey, Liberal Democrats.
