LOCAL schoolboy Zak Jenkins triumphed at the British National Rowing Championships, storming his way to success with a silver medal.
The Finchampstead based rower took part in the under 13’s age group at the British Indoor National Rowing Championships, which took place on Saturday, December 7 at the Olympic Park in London.
Facing off against stern competition, with participants travelling from all around the country from the major rowing clubs and schools across Britain to participate in the national championships. Zak not only returned with a silver medal, but smashed his personal best record in the 500 metres event.
He surpassed his personal record in the 500 metres by three seconds to take second place, and also took part in the three minute sprint race where he finished in an impressive fourth place to complete a successful day at the event.
The 12-year-old has remarkably only been training in the sport for a year where he row with both his school, Leighton Park, and Henley Rowing Club.
The former Waverley Prep School pupil is also a keen rugby player both at school and for his club, Windsor Rugby Club.
Zak was inspired to take up the sport of rowing after meeting an Olympic rowing gold medallist and now says that it is his goal to one day compete at the Olympic Games and win a gold medal.
