A cake sale is being held by Hurst Cricket Club and St Nicholas Church, Hurst, this Saturday, May 11, from 9.30am to 11.30am at the club’s ground in Wokingham Road.
The proceeds will be split between the church and the club.
Saturday is also the day of the first home cricket match at the Hurst ground since Hurst Cricket Club and Wokingham area’s Rangers Cricket Club merged to hold a joint season in 2024.
After a difficult season in 2023, the Hurst cricketers said the arrangement would secure cricket in the village. For the Rangers cricketers it means they no longer have to hire a ground.
The cricketers will vote later on making the arrangement permanent. Players from both clubs worked together preparing the ground for the new season.
The merged club has three Saturday sides, two in divisions 3 and 8 of Thames Valley Cricket League and one in Division 1 of the Berkshire Cricket League.
In addition, for seniors, there is cricket which is more social with Sunday and midweek teams.
Senior training is 6pm-8pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Hurst nets,
The youth section, All Stars to Under 15, train on Friday evenings with families and anyone else invited to enjoy the cricket, barbecue and the bar.
All are welcome at the senior and junior training sessions.
The club is delighted with its Hurst Show and Country Fayre grant for new cricket stumps to replace their ‘well past their best’ old ones.
Club treasurer Steve Hills said: “Getting a grant from a local community organisation has been a real boost.
“It is only through support of our local community that Hurst Cricket Club can continue to offer cricket in the heart of the village.”
