MECHANICS at a Wokingham garage spent a day fixing cars and fighting cancer.
While staff at Citroemech worked on customers’ vehicles, they were invited to donate to Macmillan Cancer care.
Owner Ray Cook said over £1,400 was raised with more money still pledged.
And the big-hearted businessman aims to add to the total by running in both the London and New York marathons.
“I think most people know someone who has been affected by cancer and that includes some of our customers,” explained Ray.
“All the mechanics have been touched by the bravery and determination of people whose cars they fix and have been heartened by the great work of Macmillan Cancer Care.
“That’s why we decided to hold a special fundraising day inviting customers to make a donation while we did their MOT. People have responded magnificently, and we want to thank each and every one.”
Wokingham Fire Brigade were on hand to provide safety and rescue displays, cutting the roof of scrap vehicles to the delight of younger visitors.
There was also a huge barbecue with burgers and sausages, cakes and coffee with donations added to the money raised.
Now Ray, 57, is focusing his attention on competing in two of the world’s biggest marathons.
“I’m doing the London one this month and the New York run in November,” he added.
“All sponsorship money raised will go to Macmillan. I’ve done a few marathons and while my training has been a bit disrupted, I am determined to complete both.”
