AN INTERGALACTIC invasion took place at The Oakwood Centre last week as Darth Vader popped in to launch not a Death Star but the 2018 Woodley Carnival theme.
Stormtroopers and Judge Dredd joined the evil villain to force the carnival committee to move over to the dark side: but some resisted and decided that the theme should be Heroes And Villains.
More than 50 people, including representatives of schools, businesses and charities, attended the fun event, which was led by Woodley Carnival chairman Peter Jacobs.
In his welcome, he explained that the popular event, which includes a week of activities, a parade and a fairground, is organised by unpaid local volunteers.
He urged Woodley residents to get involved in next year’s event in a variety of ways.

In 2017, the carnival supported four local charities – WADE, Woodley food bank, Woodley First Responders and the Wokingham Link Visiting Scheme and during the evening, a cheque for £2,000 as presented to each charity.
Jackie Wilson from Wade thanked the committee and told the audience that £2,000 “would make a considerable difference to the charity”.
Now, nominations for next year’s charities are being sought by the committee.
The next event on the Woodley Carnival calendar is a quiz night, which will be held on Friday, November 24.

The Carnival itself will be held on Saturday, June 9.
