Entries for the fruit, vegetable, cookery, flowers, photography, art, craft and needlework classes are invited now for the 110th Hurst Horticultural Show, which takes place later this month.
This popular show attracts visitors from miles around to see displays of locally grown vegetables, fruits and flowers together with home-baked breads and cakes, home-made preserves, handicrafts, scarecrows and photography.
The art section has become particularly popular.
Pictured is the winning entry from last year’s poster competition. The poster, which is being used for this year’s show, was created by 18-year-old Andrew Dearman from Twyford.
Show secretary Frank Whittaker said: “Our visitors love spending a couple of hours on Saturday afternoon not only marvelling at the displays but also relaxing in the friendly atmosphere of this village show.
“Live music from the EMC Jazz Band, a wine and beer tent, cream teas, hot food, local stallholders displaying their wares and the now famous Hurst alpacas are all there to enhance your afternoon.
“There’s a £2 entrance fee, but it’s free for under 18s. Last year’s show was so successful we were able to donate £2,000 to local charities. Get involved or just come along.”
- Mr Whittaker share his tips for people thinking of entering:
- Don`t be afraid to enter, there are classes for everyone including children.
- The Great British Bake Off inspired confidence, there are many baking classes.
- If you grow even a little fruit, flowers or vegetables, have a go at entering.
- Try photography or art classes.
- Calling all men, how about entering the Men Only Apple Flan competition? It’s great fun.
- Terrific bargains of fresh fruit, vegetables and flowers are available when bidding in the end-of-show auction.
Full details of the show on Saturday, August 19, from 12.30pm and how to enter are available at: www.hursthorticulturalsociety.org.
