Orchids were the order of the day as members of the Wokingham Horticultural Association held its AGM last week.
The event was held at the Bradbury Centre in Rose Street on Tuesday, January 12, and attended by the deputy town mayor, councillor Gwynneth Hewetson and her husband, Tony. She was deputising for town mayor councillor Philip Mirfin, who is also the Association’s vice-president.
Fifty nine members gathered for the meeting, which also included an illustrated talk by Graham Harding, exploring the South Downs Way which he walked with his wife Helen in 2011.
During the AGM, there were thanks to the many volunteers who help run the Association and three new members were voted on to the committee – Josie Lawrence, Sheila McKeand and Lynda Petley. Also voted in was Richard Gilling’s as the society’s new president.
The retiring president, Susan Davies, was presented with an orchid as was Nina Preston, who stepped down from her role of organising the refreshments rota. She also won the society’s Flower of the Month contest with her Camellia.
The group’s next meeting will take place on Tuesday, February 9, again at the Bradbury Centre.
The guest speaker will be Heather Skinner, deputy chairman of National Garden Scheme and county organiser for Berkshire. She will talk about the scheme’s work in opening gardens to the public.
It starts at 7.45pm and entry is £1 for members, £2 for visitors, who are welcome.
