Residents team up with support from Wokingham In Bloom
RESIDENTS have raised their glasses to a new community garden.
Set on a disused verge in Gipsy Lane, the group proved that good neighbours can become good friends – by working together to create the new green lung for Wokingham town.
Over the past few months, more than 20 households supported the project to turn the dream into a reality, from digging out the weeds to installing the new hardy plants over a weed-proof membrane. A bug hotel has been constructed and wood chips supplied by St Paul’s Church have been laid down.
One resident contributed by yarn-bombing with crocheted bunting and flowers to brighten up the area even further.

Andrew Le Breuilly, who helped coordinate the scheme, said that a lot had been achieved by the residents in such a short space of time. On Sunday, he gave a short speech thanking residents and those who had helped turn the idea into a reality.
He said: “Bob Sherrard from Wokingham In Bloom has been so supportive of everything we’ve been doing. He’s been absolutely brilliant.”
He then praised Wokingham Town Mayor Cllr Julian McGhee-Sumner for his help, along with Stan Hetherington, and Wokingham In Bloom.

Mark Rath Estate Agents contributed towards the purchase of plants and the Henry Street Nursery provided some great advice and support.
“A special thanks to Nicola Sparkes and David Lonsdale for their unwavering support and ability to dig,” Mr Le Breuilly added.

He also raised residents attentions to a blog set up charting the progress of the community garden. It includes a potted history of Gipsy Lane, prepared by Stan Harris.
It can be read at gipsylanecommunitygarden.wordpress.com
