A BOROUGH choir is calling for new members.
The Wokingham Choral Academy has recently changed its name to Wokingham Singers.
The group would like to hear from people who think they might enjoy singing and who would like to join a choir.
Potential singers are invited to join a taster session at one of their rehearsals.
The choir, with more than 80 members, sings a range of SATB songs for soprano, alto, tenor and bass voices.
They sing for enjoyment, and for the pleasure of improving, with a repertoire that includes choral classics, pop, folk and songs from the musicals.
No audition is required, and new members don’t have to be accomplished singers.
Ann Nolan from the choir said: “We’re a friendly and unpretentious group.
“We just enjoy singing, we do sing parts but there’s no pressure to be perfect.
“Some choirs can seem quite daunting, but with ours, there are quite a few of us, so there’s safety in numbers.
“You won’t need to sing any solos.”
The group’s choral director, Jo McNally has recently stepped down, and Dan Tickner has been newly appointed to the post.
With this season of change, the choir has taken the opportunity to review its name.
“We were originally the training choir for another group, but we haven’t worked in that way for a number of years,” said Ms Nolan.
“Our previous name ‘academy’ might have been a bit off-putting for new singers, so we are now simply, Wokingham Singers.”
The choir meets at St Crispin’s School, Wokingham, on Thursdays at 7.30pm, in term time, and perform two concerts annually, in the summer and at Christmas.
Potential singers are invited to contact the organisers to arrange their free session.
The group’s summer concert this year will take place in July, and will include a sale of home-made cakes to raise money for Wokingham charity, The Link Visiting Scheme.
This organisation supports older isolated people, arranging social activities and regular visits from volunteers.
Wokingham Singers’ concert this year is called Turn The World Around.
It takes place at Emmbrook School, on Sunday, July 2.
Doors open at 3.30pm, with tickets available at £8 for adults, and £4 for children under 12.
Tickets are available from Eventbrite (search for wca summer concert) or by emailing: tickets@wca.org.
