SHOULD you fancy a challenge over the May Day bank holiday than entrants are still being accepted for the 2016 Shinfield 10k.
More than 600 participants have already signed up for the annual run, which takes place on Monday, May 2, but organisers are hoping to try and attract even more to take on the 6.2-mile course.
Online entry is still available for the event, which celebrates its 31st anniversary this year, and the accompanying junior races.
“With more than 600 people already entered, I am delighted that these events continue to prove so popular with runners of all abilities,” said Colin Cottell of the Reading Roadrunners, who is also race director.
“I am especially pleased with the growth in numbers in the junior races, where entries are already up by more than a third on last year.
“This is great news as these youngsters represent the future of the sport.”
Starting at 9.30am, the 10k will take runners around the parish and because the occasion is UK Athletics licensed, all results – which are chip timed – will be added to the Power of 10 and Run Britain accounts.
As an additional incentive, there is also age group prizes up for grabs on the day, while anyone who can better the course records of 29.32 (male) and 35.09 (female) will pocket £100.
Later in the morning, meanwhile, those running in the junior races – 2.1km (Under-7s), 3.6km (U10s), 3.6km (U13s) and 5.9km (U16s) – will set off at 11am, 11.30am and midday respectively.
Each youngster will receive a medal for taking part, while there will be additional awards for the fastest boy and girl home in each category.
Those wishing to book online can also take advantage of a discounted entrance fee for the 10k of £11 (UKA-affiliated runners) and £13 for those not affiliated.
These will increase to £14 and £16 on race day.
The junior events are priced at £5 if places are secured in advance, but will rise to £7 per person on the day itself.
Any profits made from the races will be shared between the Sport in Mind charity and The Shinfield Association.
