Wokingham muslims were urged to remain calm during a sermon last week.
Imam Sahibzada Gulam Jeelani from High Wycombe addressed more than 200 members of the Wokingham Islamic Centre which meets for Friday prayers at Woosehill Community Centre.
Athar Ali, one of the members, told Wokingham Today that the Imam was reacting to what was happening nationally. He said that social media should be treated with caution, suggesting that it had been responsible for much of the recent lawlessness around the country.
He said: “The Imam said how apparently incorrect news spread quickly on various platforms, and the results were seen last weekend.”
He urged those present to stay calm and not to respond to any provocation, as well as providing guidance.
The Imam added that property should be protected, but Muslims should avoid all protests because it would only create more trouble.
He said it was better to stay away from any incidents, and to remain calm.
Athar said the reaction to the Imam’s comments was extremely good, and was the right sermon and the right time.
The Wokingham Islamic Centre is made up of Muslims from around the world, including from the Indian sub-continent, the Middle East, and Africa.
They welcome anyone to attend Friday prayers, which take place from 1pm until 2pm.
