A BOROUGH church is hosting a Christmas event with a difference that should leave its audience holding their sides.
Finchampstead Baptist Church’s Comedians and Carols event features a visit from professional stand-ups Paul Kerensa, Andy Kind, James Sherwood, and Wayne the Weird.
Paul Kerensa is British Comedy Award-winning writer of BBC’s Miranda, Not Going Out, and Top Gear.
Winner of ITV’s Take the Mike Award, he is a veteran of Spring Harvest, New Wine, and Greenbelt as well as Edinburgh and Montreal Comedy festivals.
Comedian, preacher and author Andy Kind has been performing since 2005 at comedy clubs and churches across Britain.
Described as ‘tossing out comic gems in an almost profligate manner,’ he has featured on BBC1, ITV and Channel 4, and had jokes on Dave’s One Night Stand and Live at the Apollo.
James Sherwood received the BBC Radio Entertainment writers’ bursary in 2008, and has contributed funnies to radio shows across the BBC, including The Now Show and The News Quiz.
Having made a name for himself as a topical comic, in recent years he has incorporated self-penned, original comic songs into his act.
Wayne’s comedy magic skills have seen him perform on stage internationally as well as throughout the UK, in comedy clubs, castles and bowling alleys golf clubs, churches, and even Zippos Circus.
His clients have also included Thomson Holidays, who have booked him to perform at their resorts.
Launched by Paul Kerensa, the clean, family-friendly show has been touring the nation with its festive hybrid of Christmas laughter and songs for 15 years.
Visitors can expect familiar carols with a twist, stand-up performers, magic and refreshments.
With ‘no cringing or preachiness’ the event is described as perfect for self confessed ‘non-churched sceptic humbugs and Scrooges’, as well as church folks, and organisers say that audiences typically include both in equal numbers.
Jokes lean towards an adult audience but children are welcome.
The event takes place at the Finchampstead Baptist Centre, on Saturday, December 7, from 7.30pm until 9.30pm.
Tickets cost £10, or £5 for concessions.
