Clive Jones, the Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidate for Wokingham, has announced he is stepping down from Wokingham Borough Council’s executive to focus on his ambitions to take the seat in next year’s general election.
At last week’s full council meeting he revealed he would be stepping down as executive member for Business and Economic Development, a position he has held for 19 months.
Earlier this year he handed leadership of the council to Stephen Conway to concentrate on his role as a parliamentary candidate.
Jones said: “The time is right for me to fully commit to beating John Redwood.
“This government is responsible for an appalling cost-of-living crisis, destroying the NHS and wrecking our environment.
“Every day, residents are telling me that we need a change. Labour supporters are telling me they will lend me their vote so the Lib Dems can win.
“The infighting over the last few days only serves to demonstrate further that the Conservatives are no longer fit to be running the government.
“As the first ever Lib Dem MP for Wokingham, I will work hard for all our residents to ensure a fair deal for Wokingham.”
Cllr David Cornish, councillor for the Finchampstead South ward, has been announced as the new executive member for business and economic development at Wokingham Borough Council.
He will start in this role from Friday December 1.
