LOOSE chippings left in a Woodley road have been swept up – well, a little – thanks to Wokingham Today.
A reader contacted us concerned that remedial works had been forgotten about.
Last autumn, work to repair potholes on Antrim Road at its junction with Fairwater Drive saw surface dressing works take place. This aims to reseal and waterproof the road, giving it an extra 10 years life.
However, as motorists have noticed on other roads, it leaves loose chippings. Over time, it is expected that the pressure of vehicles driving over them will smooth the surface out.
This happened on Woodlands Avenue when it was resurfaced just in time for the start of the new school year in September.
This hasn’t happened on Antrim Road, and piles of chippings have been left on the road.
The work has taken place at the junction of a residential road, close to Rivermead Primary School and Bulmershe secondary school.
A concerned parent told us: “We use this route every day.
“The street name has been knocked over, so it’s clear people don’t drive safely down here. If they go at speed, they could send the chips flying.
“One could injure a pupil going to school.
“Won’t someone think of the children?”
Last Friday, we contacted Wokingham Borough Council to ask if there would be remedial action to solve the issue.
Later that day, a spokesperson told us: “The team has been out and swept up any loose chippings and the contractors will be asked to pay a visit in the next couple of weeks to see if any remedial works are needed.”
However, when we visited on Sunday, the chippings were still in the road and piled up around parked cars.
Wokingham Today will monitor the situation.
