Apart from being the most famous year in English history for football fans, 1966 is also a red letter year for a local model railway society, writes Sabita Burke.
Over the past couple of years, members of the Berkshire Area N Gauge model railway group has been busy recreating Wokingham’s railway station in miniature.
Work has been progressing well and the group say that they are now ready to start adding buildings and scenery from the mid-60s.
But to ensure it is as authentic as possible, the N Gauge group said that they would love to hear from anyone who has any photographs or information about the area around the railway from St Paul’s Church in Reading Road to the site of the old cricket ground.
A spokesperson said that for modelling accuracy, the group requires photos of Oxford Road, Mount Pleasant, Station Road, Station Approach and Wellington Road as it was just over 50 years ago.
The work in progress including its award-winning recreation of the footbridge over the railway line will be on show, along with other model railway layouts, at the group’s open day later this month.
Displays will include a mixture of heritage to modern recreations and be on show at Sindlesham Baptist Church in Bearwood Road on Saturday, March 30.
There will also be trade stands, modelling demonstrations and refreshments. The show is open from 10am to 4pm.
