Clive Jones, Wokingham’s member of parliament, paid a visit to the pop-up shop to support the fundraising campaign for the Royal British Legion.
During his visit, he learned about this year’s campaign, as well as chatting to members of the Barkham Hookers, who have again been supporting the appeal by selling handmade crocheted poppies.
David Dunham, appeal organiser, explained one initiative this year surrounds a Christmas card, illustrating a snowbound marketplace, and the ghostly image of a young man from the town returning home to pay his respects after being killed in action.
Clive purchased a REME poppy from Barkham Hookers, and confirmed to Wokingham Today that his intention is to wear it in the House of Commons.
The unit at 1, Bush Walk, opposite Wokingham Town Hall, has been donated by landlords Pret for the duration of this year’s appeal.
The shop is offering a wide range of merchandise, and will be open on Thursday, Friday and Saturday this week between 10am and 4pm.
A limited selection of items are also available from volunteer collectors at Wokingham and Winnersh supermarkets.
