A new grocery store could be opening in Wokingham town centre.
Plans have been submitted to convert the former Anytime Fitness Gym on Peach Street into a grocery store named ‘Safa Superstore’.
The town centre gym closed in June 2023 after first opening in 2015. It has since sat unoccupied.
Plans submitted to Wokingham Borough Council say the new grocery store would sell fruit and vegetables, cold drinks, meat and poultry. No alcohol will be sold on the premises.
The store would be open between 7am to 11pm every day of the week, including bank holidays.
Potential customers can use the car parking spaces outside the store, which currently allow for 30 minutes free parking.
There is also the Easthampstead Road Car park, which is within walking distance.
Plans indicate some changes will be made to the shop front as well as the internal layout of the store. This includes a new automatic door, new lighting and an electric roller shutter.
A fruit and vegetable stand will be outside the store, and there will be CCTV installed.
If approved, the new store will join a number of convenience stores in Wokingham town centre, as well as the Waitrose and Aldi supermarkets, and specialist food store Phil’s Good Food.
Plans have been validated by Wokingham Borough Council and a decision is yet to be made.
