A man who told a woman “no means yes to me” after raping and sexually assaulting her has been jailed for eight years.
Following an investigation by Thames Valley Police, 43-year-old Farai Maumbe, of Nightingale Avenue, Chertsey, was convicted of two counts of sexual assault by penetration, as well as one count each of rape, intentional strangulation and sexual assault.
A unanimous jury found him guilty after a five-day trial at Reading Crown Court, which concluded on 12 December last year.
He returned to the same court on Friday 13 February, where he was sentenced to eight years in prison.
The court heard that on 20 May 2023, Maumbe went to the victim’s home in Berkshire and sexually assaulted her.
Despite the woman telling him to stop and attempting to resist, he continued to assault and rape her, strangling her during the attack.
The following day, when confronted by the victim about what had happened, Maumbe told her: “No means yes to me.”
He was arrested on 22 May 2023 and charged on 21 December the same year.
Det Con William Blundell, of East Berkshire CID, said the sentence reflected the seriousness of the offences.
“I welcome this sentence, which reflects the gravity of these offences and the ongoing risk the defendant poses,” he said.
“Just as he did when confronted by the victim the day after the attack, Maumbe continued throughout the trial to deny responsibility and showed no remorse for his actions.
“Thames Valley Police treats all reports of sexual offences with the utmost seriousness. Our officers are dedicated to conducting thorough investigations, supporting victims through every stage of the criminal justice process, and working closely with partner agencies to help prevent offending.
“We remain resolute in our commitment to identifying, arresting and bringing to justice those who commit sexual violence.”
