Wokingham is set to get a new fast food restaurant.
Plans have been submitted to Wokingham Borough Council that suggest a Mcdonald’s restaurant is coming to the town.
Mcdonald’s Restaurants Ltd has submitted an application for advertising consent for an advertising ‘totem’ on Finchampstead Road alongside the current Carpetright unit at Bridge Retail Park.
The park is currently home to Pets at Home and Majestic Wine.
In May 2024, Wokingham Today revealed how plans were approved for a change of use for the Carpetright unit that meant it could be used as a restaurant and takeaway.
Landlords Columbia Threadneedle had applied for the change, saying it would “improve the re-letting potential of the unit.”
Neither the landlords nor Carpetright responded to previous requests for comment.
The decision to approve that application was made on May 10, and included stipulations about the hours of use. It also noted the unit could not be used solely as a takeaway.
Now, McDonald’s Restaurants Limited has applied to Wokingham Borough Council for permission to install advertising on the site.
This includes a free-standing, 4.5 metre high illuminated ‘totem’ sign, and a wall-mounted banner.
Existing Carpetright advertising will also be removed as part of the application.
The application includes illustrations showing the unit labelled as McDonald’s, along with documents showing the famous golden arches logo.
The location is literally a stone’s throw from Burger King, which has been in the town for more than 30 years, and close to a planned Lucky’s Diner that revealed its own plans to open in Elms Field by Autumn this year.
Mcdonald’s has been contacted for comment.
The application for advertising is currently open for consultation until July 24.
