A RARE toy car will be parked ready for auction in Wokingham next week.
The bright yellow clockwork Alfa Romeo P2 racing car, made by French company, Compagnie Internationales des Jouets (C.I.J), will be offered by auctioneers Martin & Pole during their next sale on Wednesday, November 22.
The toy was one of a series made following the success of the Grand Prix car designed by Vittorio Jano, which went on to win the inaugural Automobile World Championship in 1925.
C.I.J. produced these models in the national racing colours of teams competing at that time. Yellow was the racing colour for Belgium.
The example offered at Martin & Pole belonged to the vendor’s father, who was born in 1916 in Brighton, and was presented with the toy at 14 years old in 1930.
The paintwork is in excellent condition and has the original key and box. Due to its rarity and condition, the toy is going under the hammer with an estimate of £2,500-3,500.
Auctioneer Matthew Coles said, “We have publicised this model in national trade and collectors magazines, and have had enquiries already from Europe and the USA, as well as the UK. The condition is exceptional, even down to some of the original straw packing in the box.”
Also to be offered in the auction on Wednesday, November 22 is a three stone diamond ring
estimated at £2,000 – 2,500, and a pair of Lalique glass swans with a mirrored base
estimated at £3,000 – 5,000.
A good selection of 20th century British artists will also be represented, including L.S. Lowry, John Piper, John Bratby, and Sir Stanley Spencer.
Viewing for the sale will commence on Saturday, November 18 from 9am to 1pm, and
further viewing will be available from 9am to 6pm on Monday 20 and Tuesday 21.
The auction starts at 10am on November 22.
