A CELEBRATION and a show of solidarity. That was a special concert held in Reading on Friday night, raising funds for Ukraine.
TV stars Matt Allwright and Mel Bloor introduced a host of entertainment from Ukrainian acts for the sold-out show, which took place in Reading’s town hall.
Among them were an a cappella Ukrainian male voice choir, Cossack dancers, and special guests from the Carpathian Mountains.
Performances included traditional Ukrainian music and dancing, and there was even time for Matt’s band, the Band of Hope, to perform.
Audiences were in tears with some of the emotional performances.
The event was organised by the mayor of Reading, Cllr Rachel Eden.
Also in attendance was the deputy mayor of Wokingham borough, Cllr Beth Rowland, as well as the leader of Wokingaham Borough Council, Cllr Clive Jones.
Proceeds went to the mayor’s appeal for the work of the Reading Ukrainian Community Centre in Sidmouth Street, which is doing much to help people who have come to the UK from our European neighbour, as well as sending aid and support to people in their home country.
Mayor of Reading, Cllr Rachel Eden, said: “Good evening we’re from Ukraine was a very special evening showcasing and supporting Ukrainian culture, although with war still raging this was not a celebration.
“The Reading Ukrainian Community Centre has been a focus for all in Reading who wish to show solidarity. But as well as raising vital funds for my Mayor’s appeal, it is also important we recognise Ukraine’s vibrant and beautiful culture, which Putin wishes to destroy.
“My appeal remains open and, a year on from the full-scale invasion, all donations are needed more than ever.”
On Friday, the centre will open at 10.30am to make the first anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, with a minute’s silence to be held at 11am.
A post on its social media said: “We ask you to join us for this national moment, to pay tribute to the bravery of Ukrainians and highlight the UK’s solidarity with the country as they continue their courageous fight.”
And on Saturday, there will be a march in Reading’s Broad Street.
Starting at noon near the Broad St Mall, the event organised by Reading Peace Group will see participants head to Forbury Gardens for a gathering.
