The leader of a national political party has spoken in the aftermath of the decision by Wokingham’s member of parliament to stand down.
Commenting on last week’s decision by Sir John Redwood, MP for Wokingham, not to stand in the forthcoming general election, Alan ‘Howling Laud’ Hope, the leader of the Official Monster Raving Loony party since 1999, and veteran of more than 20 general elections and by-elections, told Wokingham Today: “Perhaps Sir John Redwood resigned before he became dead wood.”
Citing a song from the 1953 film Calamity Jane, he added: “He saw the deadwood stage a-coming on over the hill.”
Alan, who is also a current councillor on nearby Fleet town council, quipped: “Perhaps he made his decision before he got chopped down to make way for new wood.”
The Official Monster Raving Loony Party is still seeking to appoint a candidate for the Wokingham constituency.
Nomination papers need to be in before 4pm on Friday, June 7.
