A SENIOR figure of a campaign group which holds pharmaceutical companies to account will take to Reading International Solidarity Centre (RISC) to deliver a talk.
Global Justice Now’s Nick Dearden, author of Pharmanomics, will speak at RISC on Wednesday, November 8 as part of the book’s launch tour. The title explores the way medicines are produced and exposes Big Pharma’s prioritisation of profit over global health.
It argues that the current system has reshaped the relationship between richer and poorer countries, as access to new medicines and the permission to manufacture them is policed. Mr Dearden suggests that another, fairer health system, with justice at its core, is possible.
UNAIDS Executive Director and United Nations Under-Secretary-General Winnie Byanyima stated that Pharmanomics “exposes how the problem of medical monopolies is not a few rule-breakers but the rules themselves”.
Jackie Oversby, co-ordinator of Global Justice Reading said: ‘We are excited that Nick will be coming to Reading to talk about his research and sign copies of his book. Nick is an excellent speaker. I’m sure it will be an interesting and positive evening.”
Copies of the book will be available to purchase at the event.
The talk takes place at 7.30pm. Entry is free and booking is not required.
