THE ROTARY Club of Wokingham brought together voluntary organisations to plant a native hedgerow in Wokingham.
With volunteers from the Friends of Howard Palmer Gardens, Freely Fruity, Holt Copse Volunteers Group and Wokingham Community Garden, they planted new saplings in Howard Palmer Gardens.
Two hundred and seventy Wild Harvest whips provided by The Woodland Trust, and contributions from children at Shinfield St Mary’s Junior School from their community tree nursery, were planted in the Wokingham green space.
A mix of hazel, blackthorn, crab apple, elder, dog rose and rowan, they will provide food and shelter for wildlife when they mature.
The project was spearheaded by Wokingham Rotary’s environment lead Cathy Boddy, who brought together multiple volunteer groups and worked in partnership with Wokingham Town Council.
Cathy said “It is great to see so many volunteers from different groups working together, and we’re grateful that they have been well supported by Marianna and her team at Wokingham Town Council who negotiated the permissions needed to plant in this conservation area, as well as arranging clearance and preparation of the planting area.
“We couldn’t have done this work without them.
“Freely Fruity were the perfect partner for us in this, with their experience and resources in this area and we are also grateful to the Howard Palmer Gardens team for now taking on the care of the hedge, watering it through the summer months and to the Town Council who will be mulching it.”
