READING FC manager Ruben Selles praised his team’s ‘composure’ as they held their nerve to defeat Charlton Athletic in a penalty shootout.

The Royals came from a goal behind with Charlie Savage’s strike taking their cup tie with the Addicks to a shootout.

Reading scored all four of their spot kicks, while Joel Pereira saved from Alfie May to send them through to the round of 16.

“The first half was slow for both teams and full of mistakes which should not happen,” said Selles.

“We missed some very clear situations, and one very clear situation

“In the penalties, all of our players were very composed and I’m very happy for them

“After the result on Sunday it was a good way to come back. A lot of players put in a good performance.”

Selles also complemented goalkeeper Joel Pereira after his penalty save from May.

He said: “We expected him to save one or two more, but with the one he saved, the first one is always important.

“He made it easier for the team and had a good performance.”

The boss also gave an update on the health of the squad.

He continued: “Sometimes with young players you have ups and downs in a season.

“It’s a natural thing. It can happen with any player when they break through.

“Andy Yiadom needed some days to recover his ankle but he has been fully training with the team.

“Tom (McIntyre) is still missing and is a matter of a couple of weeks, hopefully.

“We have a doubt with Jeriel Dorsett. He had a small problem in his knee in the last game he played and we’re not sure if he will arrive for the start of the game (on Saturday), but definitely he should be ready for the midweek game.”
