Workmen have been drafted into Woodley to help clear up the mess that Storm Katie left behind.
This morning, around 7.20am, scaffolding in the Crockhamwell Road shopping precinct in Woodley town centre collapsed. Although there was a man walking underneath it at the time, thankfully there were no injuries.
Due to it being a quiet Easter Monday bank holiday, and with the weather appalling, there were few people around at the time.
Police quickly cordoned off the area and fire crews from Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue were on the scene to assess the damage.
The area has since been fenced off – from McEvoy and Rowley to Iceland on one side and between Waitrose and Thomas Cook on the other. All businesses between the two have been shut.
Now workmen are on site to dismantle the scaffolding – a dangerous job given the scale of the collapse. Some metal poles were bent in half, such was the force of the wind.
