A SHINFIELD school has received national recognition for its sustainability efforts.
Shinfield St Mary’s CE Junior School was awarded the honour of ‘Outstanding Beacon School’ by The Tree Council at its Force for Nature exhibition.
The school was represented by 12 of its students, who made the trip up to Birmingham Botanical Gardens accompanied by two members of staff.
It was one of only three schools in the UK to receive the accolade, and was given as a result of the school planting a Miywaki forest containing 2,000 trees this year, as well as its new tree nursery.
Head of sustainability and ecology, Matt Knight, said: “It’s a real honour to be recognised by such a prestigious charity as The Tree Council. It comes off the back of some brilliant work by the children and teachers at the school.
“We don’t intend on stopping here though, there are several more exciting tree projects in the pipeline.”
He added that the plan going forward is to provide other schools and community groups with free tree saplings.
