SIR JOHN REDWOOD has renewed calls for the government to lower taxes, saying this was a reason for the two byelection defeats.
Last night, Labour regained the Wakefield seat and the Lib Dems took Tiverton and Honiton from the Conservatives, with an historic swing in their favour.
The Wokingham MP has been consistently calling on the government to lower taxes to help with the cost of living crisis, including lowering duty on fuel.
In his tweet in the wake of the two votes, Sir John said: “Conservative voters stay at home when the Treasury serves up higher taxes instead of easing the cost of living squeeze.
“They want the government to be on their side, not taxing and bossing them too much.”

And in a blog post yesterday, he set out more of his views on reducing taxation to help the economy.
“It does not need a wide range of tax rises on top of the forces slowing the economy,” he wrote.
“VAT cuts on energy would be helpful, both by cutting the prices of some of the dearest items in budgets, and by returning a bit of cash to people who otherwise have to pass the money to the fuel companies, suppliers and government energy taxes.”
