Records numbers of Hurst villagers collected a record amount of rubbish from their streets and verges in their annual tidy up on Saturday, March 23, writes Sue Corcoran.
The tidiers included many young people who were eager to help. The work went way beyond lightweight litter picking.
Their rubbish haul included car wheels and tyres, drain pipes and bags of sand.
The event was organised by Hurst Parish Council and Hurst Village Society. Their members are pictured with the army of villagers who pitched in.
They were one of a number of teams that went out last Saturday and Sunday across the borough – every parish and town council took part in the event.
Hurst councillor Wayne Smith said: “We have never had so many residents turn up, including whole families, to collect their pickers, black bags and high viz Jackets.
“The youngsters all received a gonk and a sticker stating ‘I’m a Litter Hero’. I think the local publicity and the weather helped enormously.
“We are most grateful to all involved”
