He’s more accustomed to reporting on the game rather than being part of it.
Harry McBain looks after the social media channels off the pitch for Wokingham & Emmbrook Football Club, but on Saturday he was called into action on the pitch.
At half time during the Sumas’ match at Broadfields United in London, one of the assistant referees withdrew from the match having pulled a leg muscle.
The call went out for a qualified referee to step forward, and Harry duly volunteered.
He told Wokingham Today: “I was in the bar at half time, having cake and a cup of tea, and the Broadfields’ chairman came in and asked if anyone was a qualified referee.”
He borrowed kit and boots from a Wokingham & Emmbrook player and took to the pitch.
For Harry, 18, it was his first senior competitive match although he has officiated on the line for Sumas’ pre-season friendlies.
He is currently studying sports journalism at Solent University in Southampton.
Wokingham & Emmbrook ended the match with a 1-1 draw.
