BOROUGH readers have been helping to raise money for charity, at their local supermarket.
Tesco Wokingham’s community champion Louise Jedras started a new community bookshelf this year inside the shop.
Her venture aims to recycle books and raise funds for local charities.
In July and August proceeds from the bookshelf have supported Wokingham charity, The Ollie Young Foundation, which supports research into treatment and a cure for childhood brain tumours.
Tesco shoppers donate their unwanted books to the store’s customer services desk.
These are collected by Ms Jedras and arranged on a bookshelf by the checkouts for others to browse through.
“Once people find a book they like, they can pop a donation in the collection goblet and take home a good read,” said Ms Jedras.
“There’s something for everyone, and local groups benefit.
“I’m delighted that due to the generosity of customers, we have been able to hand over a cheque to Sarah Simpson of the Ollie Young Foundation, for £322.52.”
The community book recycling scheme is now raising money for Wokingham’s WADE day centre for the elderly.
Anyone wishing to donate books should not leave them beside the bookshelf, but are asked to take them only to Wokingham Tesco customer services desk.
