Thousands of visitors flocked to a bumper Hurst Show and Country Fayre where their inspiring compere was marking 45 years in the job.
Peter Head, former PE teacher at St Crispins School, Wokingham, has been described as the event’s anchor.
There’s much admiration for his work highlighting the attractions and encouraging everyone, including tiny hobby horse riders, non-stop throughout the two day event.
Peter has now decided to stand down from the show which he first compered when it started as a one day event in 1979. The show team have thanked him for all his work.
Wearing his trademark bright yellow shirt and blue shorts, from the Head sportswear range, he said: “It is a fantastically well organised show. I’ve always been impressed how the succeeding generations have carried it on.
“I’ve very happy memories of the show and people who have organised it. I’m 70 this year and the time seems right now to step down.”
Peter, who played for Wokingham Town Football Club and was resident DJ at the club’s Oakleaf function room, continued to compere at Hurst after moving to Devon with his wife Jo. They have three daughters, a grandchild and one on the way.
Show chair Suzy Turner said: “He has been the anchor of the show, pulling it together for all the visitors and the show team.
“He has the right touch at all times, he takes time to talk to the kids and is so enthusiastic, warm and encouraging.” Now the show will be looking for someone to replace him.
Visitors last Saturday and Sunday have high praise for the show. Beth Chaffey said: “We came from Bristol as we were visiting family and were so impressed.
“From archery, bell ringing, German shepherd agility, hobby horse racing and a brilliant tug of war – my daughter had a ball and a day to remember. A massive thank you from us. We could see how much work went into this, so well done.”
Vikki Randles from the show team said: “We had a bumper year. We were delighted as we had concerns that other events in the area might affect sales so a massive thank you to everyone who came along and supported.
“We were at capacity for the number of classic cars, about 50, and the number of stallholders. We calculate we sold over 1200 pints.” She thanked the many people and groups involved in the show.
The show team will announce later how much has been raised for good causes including St Nicholas Primary School, St Nicholas Pre-School and Red Diamonds Sports Club for disabled people. Next year’s show is on June 28 and 29.
