A LEADING Conservative has paid tribute to Sir John Redwood who has announced he is not standing for re-election on July 4.
The veteran MP said on his blog: “I have other things I wish to do”.
First elected in 1987, he had been re-selected by his party last year and had been expected to have his name on the ballot paper.
But instead, he decided to stand down, bringing to an end his parliamentary career.
He has said that he will continue to make postings on his blog and comment on public policy debates.
“It has been a privilege to represent Wokingham in nine Parliaments,” he wrote.
Emma Webster, Berkshire Area Chairman for the Conservatives, said she was saddened by the news.
“Sir John has served his constituency and country with distinction,” she said.
“He served as a Minister and in a series of Cabinet and Shadow Cabinet roles – including as Head of Policy for Margaret Thatcher.
“Above all, he has consistently and diligently served his constituents in Wokingham – something proved by the fact they have endorsed him at eight elections in a row.
“We want to thank him for his service and wish him well for the future”.
