THEY have been at the heart of the village for over 350 years.
Now the two oldest residents in Winnersh will finally be named during this Saturday’s annual fete.
The oak trees on Bearwood Recreation Ground are loved by the entire community and have survived storms, wars and development.
At the end of last year’s fete, a competition was launched to officially name them and the winning names will be revealed during the fete.
Cllr Paul Fishwick, chair of the parish council said: “The names have been selected and approved by the Wokingham District Veteran Tree Association and they will be revealed on Saturday.
“Brass plaques will be carefully attached to the oaks.”
The fete, which is free, kicks off at 1pm and finishes around 4.30pm.
Last year more than 2,500 people attended and that number is expected again on Saturday.
A packed programme includes the famous tug-o-war, birds of prey demonstrations and the wheelbarrow race.
There will be plenty of stalls selling everything from crafts to cosmetics, loads of food including a Scouts’ barbecue and sweets, jams and chutneys to take home.
This year’s charities which will benefit from donations are ARC Counselling and Homestart.
