Evendons Lane in Wokingham has reopened to traffic following weeks of closure caused by a failing sewer beneath the road, bringing relief to local drivers and residents.
The lane was shut for safety reasons after concerns grew that the sewer could collapse, posing a serious risk. Thames Water carried out a complex repair operation, pumping the site dry and relining the pipe to prevent any repeat of last summer’s incident, which had caused significant disruption.
The repair process proved more complicated than expected. An initial attempt to fix the sewer failed when excavations collapsed, forcing engineers to secure the area and bring in specialist teams to safely complete the work.
Thames Water has thanked residents and motorists for their patience during the disruption, acknowledging that the repairs took longer than planned due to the challenging conditions underground.
The reopening of Evendons Lane is expected to ease traffic congestion in surrounding areas, which had been experiencing delays and diversions during the closure.
Officials have stressed that the relined sewer should prevent similar incidents in the future, providing a long-term solution to a problem that has plagued the road for months. Local residents and drivers alike have welcomed the news, calling it “a huge relief.”
The council and Thames Water continue to monitor the site to ensure safety and prevent further disruption.
