Girls from Wokingham schools took centre stage in a recent initiative aimed at growing rugby participation in the local community. Over 40 Year 5 and Year 6 pupils attended a Girls’ Rugby Taster Session at Bracknell Rugby Club.
The event brought together primary school pupils from across the area, with strong representation from Wokingham-based schools. It was designed as a fun, inclusive introduction to rugby, with no previous experience required.
Throughout the afternoon, the pitches were full of energy as participants learned new skills, worked in teams, and supported one another in a welcoming environment. Many experienced rugby for the first time, and coaches reported excellent engagement and enthusiasm across all groups.
Organisers said the strong turnout reflects growing interest in girls’ sport locally and highlights the important role schools play in encouraging participation.
The initiative is part of a wider effort to increase opportunities for girls to access team sports in Wokingham and surrounding communities. By working with local schools, organisers hope to create accessible pathways for young players who wish to continue their rugby journey.
Further taster sessions are expected to be announced as interest in girls’ rugby continues to grow across the area.
