A REVIEW of the number of waste bins in the borough is on hold while councillors have a rethink over which ones to remove.
Notices had appeared at Woosehill Meadows prompting a protest on The Wokingham Paper Facebook page and readers have complained to us about overflowing bins in Elms Field.
They say bins in the play area were emptied on a Monday while those in the open areas were emptied on Wednesdays which, they argue, was inefficient.
In Woosehill, people fear problems of dog mess will increase since dog bins were removed and replaced with dual purpose bins, which they says are not emptied enough.
The borough-wide review was intended to ensure bins were in the positions where they were most needed and were easy to empty.
But Councillor Angus Ross, Wokingham Borough Council’s executive member for environment, said: “We have suspended removing any bins while we look more closely and talk with local councillors so that we get the best value we can for residents.”
Cllr Ross said the council is looking into one idea for some areas where bins are numbered and residents are able to text or ring the council to tell them if they are full.
He added: “It wouldn’t replace normal routine emptying of bins but when there are special events or out of the ordinary events it might help.”
He added: “It’s an idea. It just seems possible that’s a good compromise.
“We’re trying not to have overflowing bins around but we don’t have staff able to look at every bin every day. That wouldn’t be possible.”
