PARKING permits on a Wokingham Town Centre street were the cause of a petition submitted to Wokingham Borough Council.
Norreys ward Labour councillors Rachel Burgess and Marie-Louise Weighill told the chamber it was a “small but significant example of how the council could help”.
They said residents of Rose Street wanted to welcome caregivers, tradespeople, family and friends to their homes, and a paper permit system allowed them to do so. But “this system was ended without warning and a new virtual system imposed”.
Residents had to be a car owner to get a permit, and was linked to a specific registration plates.
“While you can apply for different caregivers, you have to know their registration number to do this,” they said. “For people who may receive up to five care visits a day, it’s impossible to know in advance who is going to come. This has caused residents to feel their care is being compromised by this constant anxiety over whether they can secure the parking they need.
“The system is unsuited to the situation in Rose Street.”
More than 75 residents signed the petition, which will now be considered by council officers.
