Wokingham Borough Council has been overwhelmed with volunteers after appealing for help to run some of its libraries.
In the face of lower funding from central government, and in response to the funding challenges facing libraries, it appealed for volunteers to run some of its smaller libraries.
In a statement to Wokingham Today, it said: “The council understands the vital role libraries play in our communities, but also the threats they face with low government funding and the need to continue to attract visitors.”
It said it was tackling the fundamental issues by increasing usage and reducing costs.
As an immediate measure, it launched an appeal for volunteers.
A spokesperson said: “We are incredibly grateful to the more than 50 people in Wargrave who answered the call to help run their local library.
“The first cohort are being trained up now. More volunteers are being sought in Spencers Wood and Arborfield.”
In the longer term, the council is aiming to innovate to ensure its libraries are relevant and well-used. It is also seeking to expand what they can be used for.
“This work is in early stages, and we are currently looking at what services and what partners might be the best fit in them, tailored to local needs.”
Cllr Sarah Kerr, executive member responsible for libraries said: “Libraries are places of learning, culture, community, inclusion and safety.
“They are places where children can develop their love of reading, and adults can indulge theirs – and all for free.
“But, across the country libraries are under pressure, because of reductions in Government funding.
“We are looking at creative ways to tackle the root causes of the problems: funding and changing usage.
“By training volunteers to assist us in running council owned libraries we are saving money through harnessing community power.
“If our success in attracting volunteers and working with the community continues, we will not just be able to keep libraries open, we may even be able to expand what is on offer in them.”
The council’s commitment to libraries has seen it open a micro-library in Shinfield last year, and work is under way on Twyford’s new library at the former Polehampton Boys School.
The council is still seeking more library volunteers, and is particularly keen to hear from people who might be able to help in Spencers Wood and Arborfield.
