A LABOUR party member has joined the list of candidates hoping to be selected for the new Earley and Woodley parliamentary seat.

Hanif Khan is hoping party members will pick him to contest the constituency when the general election is called. It covers Shinfield, the Whitley and Church wards of Reading Borough and Sonning as well as Earley and Woodley.

“I am thrilled to announce my candidacy for the Earley and Woodley constituency seat,” he said.

“My journey is rooted in the values of hard work and a relentless commitment to making a positive impact.

“My father’s socialist ideals ignited my passion for bringing about change, and I owe a profound debt to my family’s sacrifices.

“I am fully engaged in the vibrant Earley and Woodley community, home to over 70,000 residents from diverse backgrounds.”

Mr Khan is a second-generation British Pakistani and a grandfather and served as councillor on Hounslow Council in London from 2014 to 2022.

He said: “I have eight years of experience as an elected councillor, working on the front bench in roles like transport.

“I am chair of the Hounslow Co-operative Party – a part of Labour that works towards a more equal society.

“The cost-of-living crisis, rising mortgages, escalating rents, access to quality healthcare and schools, and environmental concerns are equally critical. Pollution in our rivers, exemplified by the state of the river Loddon, demands immediate attention: affordable public transportation and solutions to business rate inequalities, shop theft, and crime.

“I’m advocating for asylum seekers and refugees’ rights to work and vote, and supporting family carers. Our NHS requires proper investment and levelling up in our society.”

A businessman, he said: “I have run my business for over 20 years and understand the business opportunities available, Shinfield Studios, Winnersh Triangle, and Thames Valley Business Park, all growth areas with a massive potential for Earley and Woodley and bring about education, employment and entrepreneurship, which will encourage Reading students to stay here after graduating.

“I am a member of BECTU/Prospects and the Community Union who worked on a game-changing manifesto called the Progressive Manifesto Plan for Self-Employed people in the UK is transformative and something I firmly get behind.

“I pledge unwavering dedication to secure victory for Labour in the next General Election.

“Together, we’ll create a unique identity for Earley and Woodley, united as one strong Community; this is my commitment to you.”

Other candidates seeking nomination as Labour’s candidate include Cllr Rachel Eden (Labour, Whitley) and councillor Annie Gallop, who represents Myatts Fields on Lambeth Council in London.

Party members are expected to choose the successful candidate before Christmas.

Cllr Pauline Jorgensen (Conservative, Hillside) was announced as her party’s candidate in the summer, and the Liberal Democrats are yet to announce their candidate.
