WOODLEY Town Council’s Climate Change Week brought together locals, experts, and creative climate warriors for a week of learning and fun last week.
“On Saturday morning, Woodley Adopt-a-Street (WASP) members were out in force litter picking on the first morning,” said Woodley Town Councillor Carol Jewel.
“It was a good way to publicise the group’s work and the importance of NOT dropping litter.
“My biggest issue is cigarette butts: Why do people think it’s ok just to throw these on the floor or in the bushes?”
Carol, who is also Wokingham Borough Council Mayor, was a charity shop fashion show that followed the litter pick.
“There was a very impressive catwalk of clothes, all from the Thames Hospice charity shop, and the volunteer models did a wonderful job;” she said.
The same afternoon a climate change lecture given by Professor Chris Merchant from the University of Reading gave people an insight into the science behind climate change.
“This was an impressive explanation of the facts and challenges of climate change, without it being all doom and gloom,” said Carol.
“I learnt a lot.”
And as a member of the Walking and Cycling Sub-committee, Carol led a Monday morning walk.
“We enjoyed blue skies and sunshine on our 5kms circular walk from the Oakwood Centre to Ashenbury Park and Aldermoors, although it was a bit chilly,” she said.
Carol, organiser of Woodley Repair Shop, organised a pop-up Repair Café too.
“We had a number of repairs brought in, although nothing like the numbers we have at our monthly Repair Café,” she said, “however, it’s always good for people to find out about us.”
