Wokingham United Charities is an amalgamation of some 21 local charities, some of which date back to the oldest in England.
Our origins can be dated all the way back to 1451 when John Westende gifted eight cottages for the those in need in Wokingham.
Five hundred plus years later we provide almshouse accommodation here at Westende and manage a substantial Relief in Need fund that provides grant funding for local charities and individuals within the Borough of Wokingham.
Westende Almshouses
Westende consists of two blocks of self-contained flats, 27 in all, in pleasant well maintained gardens, located in Peach Street, Wokingham, Berkshire. They are close to the shops and only a short walk from other facilities. The Almshouses are for the elderly who are unable to afford to buy or rent in Wokingham.
Essential Items Grants
We realise sometimes everyone needs a helping hand. Our Essential Item Grant programme is aimed at individuals or families who have found themselves in circumstances of financial hardship and are in need of an essential item. These items could be white goods, essential equipment, transport, funding support, school trips, debt-related fees, counselling etc. We review each individual application on its own merits.
Relief In Need Grants – organisations
Relief in need Grants are available for charities and community groups in Wokingham Borough. We fund projects that provide innovative, sustainable and preventative solutions to issues in the Borough. We have a particular interest in supporting charities/projects that break the cycle of poverty and relieve financial hardship with a preventative aspect. This work may include but is not limited to, supporting access to employment and further training, money management and debt advice, mental health and wellbeing.
Bright Futures Fund
We believe every child deserves the chance to shine, regardless of their background. Our mission is simple: to empower children from low-income households to unlock their full potential through enriching extracurricular experiences. So we support children from low-income households to get involved in extracurricular activities, including school trips, club memberships, sports equipment, instrument rental purchase and participation fees. From sports to arts, music to science clubs, we’ve got you covered.
Household Support Fund
The Household Support Grant is provided by Wokingham Borough Council, offering money to households struggling with food, bills, energy costs and other everyday essentials. The new round is now open for applications and runs until Monday 30 September 2024.
