Reading FC show interest in signing Swansea City defender Ryan Bennett

Reading FC are reportedly interested in bringing Swansea City centre-back Ryan Bennett to the club this summer.

According to walesonline.com, the Royals have made moves to try and bring the experienced defender to the Select Car Leasing Stadium this transfer window.

Paul Ince’s side are currently under an EFL transfer embargo which will complicate matters and limit the club to making loan signings and free agents.

Bennett has reportedly been told by Swans boss Russell Martin that he is free to leave the club this summer.

In April, Martin said: “Ryan (Bennett) knows where we’re at. We had a really good chat about it.

“He’s not part of our plans moving forward. He knows that.

“To play this way you have to be all in. It’s difficult for some people.”

However, finances may prove to be a barrier to the transfer with the player needing to take a singinicang pay cut in order for a move to be feasible and more likely to be accepted by the English Football League given the financial restrictions placed on the club.

Bennett has vast experience at both Premier League and Championship level.

He made a total of 61 Premier League appearances for Norwich City across four seasons in the top flight before making a move to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

He helped Wolves win promotion from the Championship to the Premier League in 2017/18 under Nuno Espirito Santo and then played 45 games in the top flight across two seasons, scoring once.

Bennett had a loan spell at Leicester City in 2019/20 where he made five league appearances before he joined Swansea on a permanent deal in October 2020.

The former England U21 international played 20 games in all competitions in the 2021/22 season for the Swans, but is now seeking a new club ahead of the 2022/23 campaign.
