OFTEN associated the Covid-19 pandemic, remote learning has been on the University of Reading’s radar since the inception of its online courses programme a decade ago.
Celebrating its 10th birthday this week, the initiative has redefined the possibilities for open learning and global engagement, and has enrolled more than 1.5 million people from at least 160 countries.
More than 3,800 students have gone on to study at the University after completing one of its short online courses. There are 40 courses on offer which showcase Reading’s leading teaching and research.
Vice-Chancellor Robert Van de Noort said: “The mission of our University is to change lives through excellent education and research, and our fantastic online courses allow us to expand our engagement from thousands to millions of students.
“We are extremely proud of the achievements of our online courses programme over the past 10 years, made possible through the talent and innovation of our colleagues and the curiosity and application of our online learners.
“This project has redefined what is possible in online education and opened up the transformative power of University of Reading learning to students worldwide.”
As well as supporting prospective students and adult learners, courses have supplemented current students’ university experiences through offerings such as Stress-Free University Interviews and Study Smart.
The initiative has also created opportunities for students to contribute to their courses. Contributors share their experiences and gain valuable skills in course development, writing, filming and more. Their involvement has ensured that courses remain relevant and accessible.
Online courses in partnership with organisations like EIT Food and Royal Meteorological Society have extended the University’s commitment to tackling challenges like climate change and providing continuing professional development.
