Andy Carroll is set to make a return to Reading FC, according to reports.

The 33 year-old is a free agent after departing West Bromwich Albion in the summer and is due to begin his second spell in Berkshire.

Carroll joined the Royals last year on a short-term contract under Veljko Paunovic.

The striker made a positive impression despite his short stay, where he made eight Championship appearances and scored two goals.

His first Reading goal came in a 3-2 away win at Swansea City and his second came in a 2-1 defeat at Middlesbrough.

After his contract expired, he joined West Brom for the remainder of the season where he scored three league goals in 15 matches.

Known for his excellent aerial presence and physical dominance, Carroll burst onto the scene with Newcastle United where he captured the attention of several clubs after netting 17 in 2009 to help the Magpies to the Championship title.

He made a big money move to Liverpool in January 2010 after the Reds spent £35million to make him the record transfer for a British player at the time.

A difficult spell at Liverpool saw Carroll score six goals in 44 games before he joined West Ham United on loan in 2012.

Carroll joined the Hammers on a permanent deal and spent six more seasons with the club, scoring 33 goals in 126 games.

He made a return to his boyhood club Newcastle, where he managed to score one league goal in 37 games.

The former England international, who scored twice in his nine international caps, looked set to join Champions League side Club Brugge earlier in the summer, but the move broke down.

He is now set for a second spell at the Select Car Leasing Stadium after Royals boss Paul Ince confirmed last week that the club are still actively pursuing the free agents market to bolster their team.
