A COMMUNITY group’s fundraiser is set to return for a second time to help raise funds for a cause close to the people of Reading’s hearts.

Southlake Angling Society will host Olly Stephens 2nd Memorial Match and Fun Day on September 2 and 3, in honour of member Stuart Stephens’ son.

In January 2021, Reading was left stunned by Olly’s death as a result of knife crime and his parents, Stuart and Amanda, have since lobbied to parliament for increased child protection from social media influence.

The society was keen to help and launched the fundraiser last year, which saw more than 50 children catch their first fish.

Of last year’s event, Stuart said: “Everyone gave it their all, organisers, contributors, guests, and the very generous people of Woodley. We held a raffle, a silent auction and sold burgers.

“It was a huge success. Our chosen charities benefited from the £6,661 raised, and with fund matching, we were able to donate to the No5 Young People’s Hub, Parenting Special Children and the Ben Kinsella Trust £5,000 each, which was outstanding for an event that was thrown together within 5 weeks.”

“Our message is not only about children making the right choices but also about the benefits of being in and amongst nature and the positive effect it can have on your well-being.”

The angling club is calling on the community to help with donations for the raffle and sealed bid auction this year. Organisers are also interested to hear from anyone who could contribute to the event in any other way.

The event takes place at 10am.
